This rhythm allows teen artists to build their skills in a supportive studio environment while experiencing the authentic flow of Mediterranean life.
8:30 AM: Breakfast & Conversation: Start the day with a traditional Spanish breakfast at your homestay. This is a perfect time for teens to practice basic phrases with their host family before heading to the day's activities.
9:30 AM: Guided Art Workshops: Students head to the studio for focused sessions led by local art teachers. Whether it’s practicing the geometric patterns of Nasrid tile-work or the flowing lines of Arabic calligraphy, these workshops provide hands-on instruction tailored for the high school level.
1:30 PM: The Afternoon Comida: The most important meal of the day in Spain. Students return to their homestays for a fresh, three-course Mediterranean meal and a period of siesta to rest and recharge.
4:30 PM: Cultural Immersion & Urban Art: The group regathers for afternoon expeditions. This might involve a guided sketching tour of the Albaicín, a visit to the Alhambra, or exploring the bold contemporary murals in the Realejo district.

11:00 PM: Curfew: All high school students are back in their vetted homestays for a night of rest, ensuring they are refreshed for the next day's creative challenges.
A hands-on exploration of Spain’s multi-layered heritage. In these guided workshops, high school students move beyond the role of a tourist and into the role of a creator. By studying the techniques of local art instructors, teens uncover how the blend of Islamic, Jewish and Christian influences created a visual language unique to Andalusia, building a bridge between historic traditions and modern expression.
The Nasrid Legacy: Plaster & Tile Students learn the geometric precision used to build the Alhambra, mastering the delicate art of plaster carving and traditional tile design. These hands-on workshops reveal the mathematical beauty of Islamic art and its lasting impact on the architecture of Southern Spain.
The Art of the Line: Arabic Calligraphy A deep dive into the spiritual and aesthetic power of the written word. Teens explore how script becomes art, practicing the flowing lines and ancient techniques that have adorned the palace walls of Granada for over seven centuries.
Modern Masters: Marquetry & Urban Art Bridging the gap between the ancient and the contemporary. Students transition from the intricate, traditional wood-inlay (taracea) of Granada to an exploration of the city’s world-famous street art scene, seeing how local artists continue to use the city walls as a canvas for cultural expression.
Expanding the studio into the Spanish landscape. To truly understand Andalusian art, teen travelers must experience the environments that inspired it. From the high-altitude villages of the Sierra Nevada to the modern museums of the Mediterranean coast, these excursions provide the visual and historical context that brings our studio workshops to life.
The Sierra Nevada: Natural Inspiration A mountain excursion to the picturesque "white villages" of Las Alpujarras. Clinging to the rugged slopes of the Sierra Nevada, these historic towns offer high school students a glimpse into the traditional rural life and natural textures of Southern Spain.

"The Alhambra wasn't just a place we visited—it was our inspiration. Getting to actually carve plaster patterns like what I saw in the palace walls was an incredible experience. It made history feel like something I could actually touch and create." — Maddy, 12th Grade, Wayzata High School, Plymouth, MN
"Walking through the Albaicín was like stepping back in time. I loved our morning workshops, but the best part was coming home to my host family and practicing my Spanish while sharing a traditional meal. Granada felt like home by the end of the first week." — Lulu, 10th Grade, Von Steuben High School, Chicago, IL
"I came for the art workshops, but the weekend trip to Málaga and the Picasso Museum really opened my eyes. The Arcos directors made us feel so confident navigating the city—it was the perfect mix of independence and feeling totally taken care of." — Ali, 11th Grade, NEST+m, New York, NY
Not at all. Our workshops are designed specifically for teenagers of all skill levels, from beginners to experienced artists. Local maestros provide individualized instruction, ensuring every high school student is supported at their own pace. Similarly, there is no Spanish language requirement. While we encourage students to practice basic phrases with their host families, our bilingual Arcos Directors provide full support, making the program accessible to all teens regardless of their Spanish background.
While Granada is one of Spain’s safest cities, our "Group Bubble" model is designed to provide the structure high school students need. Arcos Directors accompany the teen group to all morning workshops, afternoon activities, and weekend excursions. We provide "managed independence" during designated free time in pre-vetted areas, where students must remain in pairs or groups, with their Arcos program director always nearby and reachable by phone 24/7.
We provide all the specialized materials required for our high school workshops, including professional calligraphy pens, plaster carving tools, and ceramic tiles. Teen artists are only asked to bring a high-quality sketchbook and their preferred drawing pencils to capture inspiration during our city walks. A detailed packing list tailored for high school travelers will be provided upon enrollment.
