We carefully choose locations within your program region or country for their natural beauty, cultural richness, or historical significance. These day or overnight trips typically occur on weekends. Our excursions are designed to connect students with their experience, fostering learning and understanding through firsthand encounters. The most memorable moments come from these impactful, unique experiences. Below is a list of our available excursions.
While in Oaxaca, you will visit the awe-inspiring pre-Hispanic ruins of Monte Albán. This former Zapotec capital city is considered one of the most impressive and significant archaeological sites in Mexico. The remarkably well-preserved ruins majestically sit atop a commanding hill outside of Oaxaca City, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding valley. The numerous imposing pyramids and ancient buildings found at Monte Albán fill the site with an undeniable air of awe and profound mystery.
Hierve el Agua (or "Boiling Water") is a breathtaking natural wonder located west of Oaxaca City. Its name comes from the mineral-rich springs that appear to boil as they seethe from the ground. These extraordinary springs have captivated visitors for over 2,500 years, with pre-Hispanic cultures revering their natural beauty and therapeutic properties. This excursion will take you along scenic mountain roads, offering awe-inspiring views of canyons and hillsides. After your hike, you'll have the opportunity to unwind in the relaxing springs.
Mitla's ancient Zapotec ruins, dating back two or three centuries before the Spanish conquest, are among Mesoamerica's most significant archaeological sites. As you walk through the ruins, the intricate architecture and beautifully preserved wall paintings transport you to a time when this was the region's most important religious center. Surrounding the ruins, a vibrant Zapotec town boasts a large market filled with locally made handicrafts, perfect for exploration.
Immerse yourself in the vibrant heritage of Oaxaca's central valleys. Explore the lively Tlacolula market, Oaxaca's most renowned outdoor market, offering everything from exquisite handicrafts to fresh produce. Journey to Teotitlán del Valle, a classic Zapotec town celebrated for its ancient tradition of hand-woven rugs. Witness the age-old art of dyeing wool with natural ingredients and try your hand at the loom in a local workshop. Enjoy a traditional regional meal, often prepared in the home of an artisan, offering an authentic taste of Oaxacan culture.
Marvel at the gargantuan El Tule tree. Calculated to be over 3,000 years old, this behemoth is considered one of the largest living biomasses on the planet, with a trunk circumference exceeding 100 feet.
Discover the breathtaking Sierra Norte Mountains, an expansive range just north of Oaxaca City that offers a dramatic contrast to the colonial city's charm. Trek through dense cloud canopies and ancient pine forests, perfect for invigorating hikes that lead you to remote Zapotec communities. During this unforgettable excursion, students will immerse themselves in local culture, exploring the area with a knowledgeable indigenous Zapotec guide. Savor a delicious lunch showcasing the unique culinary traditions of the region, making this trek a true highlight of your Oaxaca experience. The visit ends with a zipline for those up to the challenge!
Travel back in time to the ancient monastery of Saint James, also known as Cuilapam, built in 1535. Explore its elaborate Gothic cloister and splendid frescoes. The Saint James Convent is rich in history and is the site where Vicente Guerrero, father of the Mexican Republic, was infamously executed in 1831. Step onto the floor of the unfinished church (its massive roof was destroyed during an earthquake 200 years ago!) and search for the tomb of Princess Donají, a Zapotec princess and early convert to Christianity. Legend claims she fell in love with a Mixtec King, the Lord of Tilantongo. It is one of the most ornate yet hidden sites in the entire valley and is now considered a national treasure.
The Oaxacan coast boasts stunning cliffside views and thousands of small, pristine bays. Unlike other coastal areas of Mexico, it remains largely untouched and primarily caters to local tourism. This excursion offers students the chance to explore several beautiful beaches, snorkel in clear waters, embark on a boat trip to spot dolphins and turtles, or even take a surfing class. It's the perfect opportunity to witness the incredible biodiversity that the Oaxacan coast has to offer.
